!Emerald Glen hosts Rep Mike Stinziano by Liz Nusken, Director – Ohio After School Network

From the Director, Ohio After School Network

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Congratulations to Suzanne Schaefer, OAN member and Vice Chair of the Standards and Quality Committee for hosting a site visit with Representative Michael Stinziano, 18th Ohio House District!

Representative Stinziano was very impressed with Columbus State Community College’s English as a Second Language Afterschool Communities program, managed by Suzanne. The program is nationally recognized by the US Department of Education and designed to serve Somali Bantu refugees with academic supports, health and nutrition, violence prevention and anti-alcohol and drug programming. One unique feature of the program is that it operates in the housing communities in which the participants live, helping to make possible parent involvement and regular communication. Visiting the program, seeing the children and youth participate and talking with Suzanne and Homeport Housing’s Director of Community Life, Gwyn Stetler, helped Representative Stinziano better appreciate afterschool programs and the understand benefits they provide to children, youth and their families.

The recently published Expanding Minds and Opportunities: Leveraging the Power of Afterschool and Summer Learning for Student Success includes a piece written by a Lisa Pray, a Vanderbilt University Peabody College Associate Professor, who finds that afterschool and summer learning programs are a promising approach to support English Language Learners (ELL). The author contents that homework support and study skills development, staff members who share linguistic and cultural backgrounds as the students, and including parents and other family members in the program provide added and important benefit for ELLs.

Ms Pray assert English language acquisition is an active process requiring frequent, purposeful interaction with English content and the most useful afterschool activities are meaningful and closely tied to real objects and enterprises in the students; provide a concrete context for words and languages and leverage ELL students’ bilingual abilities. The full essay, along with all others in the book, is available for free at http://www.expandinglearning.org/expandingminds….

With warm regards, Liz
